What are small groups?

The purpose of small groups at HDC is to build meaningful relationships that better prepare people to change their worlds for Christ. A small group consists of 6-20 individuals who meet together regularly to encourage and remind each other of the mission God has given us. Groups might be coed, men only, women only, couples only...etc. We try and form groups based on your life stage.

When do small groups start?

Small Groups start the second week of September.

Where and what time do small groups meet?

All of our sermon-based small groups meet off campus. Most meet in homes, but some meet in parks, at Starbucks, and even in the workplace. The time and days are set up by the group leader and participants.

What happens at a small group?

Every group is a little different, but food is almost always involved, the Bible is opened and studied, and more than anything else, we hope people get the chance to develop community and grow closer to Jesus.

Does it cost anything to attend a small group?

No. That’s an easy one.

Can I be part of more than one small group?

We can’t control what you do, but in our opinion if you want to find community and grow closer to Jesus, the best way is to find one small group and share life with them. Growth and accountability happen best when you’re committed to one group.

Is childcare provided?

No. The church does not provide childcare, but some groups have chosen to combine their resources and pay for a babysitter for their kids in an additional room of the house or at a nearby home. There are some small groups that are family oriented.

What kind of curriculum do the small groups use?

Most of our small groups use the sermon-based curriculum, although there are some groups that study specific topics under that permission and understanding of our pastoral team.

Why do HDC small groups break for the summer?

One of our unique small group strategies is to take a break over the summer, so most of our groups stop meeting from June-August.

Most living things go through different seasons -- growth, then stability, then rest, and back to growth. We think small groups are healthiest when they follow a similar rhythm, so taking a break from the normal routine is good.

That's why schools have summer breaks and you take vacations.
